When we observe the Lord’s Supper, we remember Jesus and proclaim His death until He comes. In partaking of the bread and juice we indicate that we have trusted Christ as our Savior in whose body our sins were born on the cross (2 Pe. 2;24), and through whose shed blood our sins have been forgiven (Eph. 1:7). It is also true that while we observe the Lord’s Supper, we demonstrate our unity with one another as a church (1 Cor. 10:16-17). In the passage for this morning, Paul rebuked the church at Corinth for observing the Lord’s Supper though there were divisions in the church (1 Cor. 11:17-34). Far from being unified, some by their divisive conduct were despising others in the church. Paul wrote to rebuke and to correct this behavior.
