Jesus provided a great salvation (Hebrews 2:1-4). He was able to provide such a great salvation because He Himself is so great. “Therefore, He is also able to save to the uttermost (completely) those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25). The salvation Christ provided is great because it is complete and eternal. “Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption” (Hebrews 9:12). The Old Covenant with its animal sacrifices could never take away sins (10:4), but, by His blood, the blood of the New Covenant, Jesus has forever forgiven and perfected His people (10:12, 14, 13:12).
This great salvation which Jesus brought must not be neglected. For if every disobedience to the Old Covenant, which was brought by angels, was punished, then how much more severely will those who neglect the New Covenant be punished (cp.10:29). We who have been blessed with this great salvation in Jesus Christ must never neglect it. We must as the writer of Hebrews urges, “let us go on to perfection” (6:1). “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23). We must give earnest heed to the truths of salvation which were first spoken by the Lord Jesus and confirmed by His apostles who heard Him. We must pay close attention to these truths and continually apply them to our lives lest we drift away!
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:12-13).
Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble (2 Peter 1:10).
