By faith, Enoch avoided what very few in the history of the world have avoided – death! People have been dying from the beginning. It was because of the first man’s sin that death spread to all people (Rom.5:12). Death is not a part of life, but the penalty of sin and therefore, the end of life. Because of Enoch’s faith in God, he walked with God. And before he was taken alive by God from the earth, he had this testimony, that he pleased God. What a powerful, yet simple testimony, “He pleased God.” It would have been a great epitaph, but Enoch had no grave stone on which to engrave it!
We all should strive to please God – to walk in fellowship with Him! By faith, Enoch pleased God, but without faith it is impossible to please the Lord (Hebrews 11:5-6). Those who come to Him must believe that He is – that He exists. The “God” of Whom the writer of Hebrews speaks is not any God of one’s own choosing, but the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (Heb.1:1-4). He is the God to Whom we may come, but only through His Son, Jesus Christ (Heb.7:25). Those who by faith come to Him through Jesus are saved eternally. But after coming to God through Christ, we must diligently continue to seek Him, and in so doing we will find great reward!
