On this long three-day weekend, we celebrate our independence as a nation. The liberty we so often take for granted can be traced back to our country’s founding in the late 1700’s. May we remain thankful for the many sacrifices that were made in order to procure the freedoms we still enjoy today.
There is, however, a greater freedom – one that is more consequential and longer lasting (John 8:31-36). Jesus said, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (Jn.8:32). The freedom of which Christ spoke is the freedom from sin. The truth is only Christ, the Son of God, can free us from this master. We were all born slaves to sin, but through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection all who believe in Him are freed from sin’s power and penalty. “Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (vs.36).
