Psalm 46 begins, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” As our refuge, He protects us when attacked by our enemies, and as our strength, He strengthens us to endure whatever trouble we encounter. He is not only our help, but a very present help – He is always with us!
In this Psalm, God warns those who would attack His people. They must consider that the people they are troubling are the people of God, and that He will fight for them. He warns them in verse 10, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” The warning is very similar to the one issued in Psalm 2:10-12 to the nations who would gather against God’s Anointed.
Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
Because God is our refuge, we must not fear, but put our trust in Him!
