A Child Born; A Son Given

One of the most well-known Old Testament prophecies predicting the first advent of Messiah is found in the book of Isaiah. “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) You may have received or sent a Christmas card with this verse printed on it during this holiday season!
Messiah was born a child in the line of His father David. He is “the” Son of David through Whom the Davidic Covenant is being fulfilled (See 2 Sam. 7:12-17). Verse 7 tells us that He will reign on David’s throne, and that His kingdom will endure forever. The names (4 or 5?) given to Christ in verse 6 indicate His nature. The names, Mighty God and Everlasting Father are clear references to His deity – the Messiah is both God and Man! This Son of David is also the Son of God!
