Because Sarah believed God she conceived and gave birth to a son when she was considerably older than child bearing age. She believed God and by faith she became a mother for the first time at the age of ninety. Sarah had faith in God, but what did she believe about Him in order to experience such a wonderful miracle? Sarah was not only too old to have a child, she was barren – she had never conceived and born a child.
Sarah’s faith in God included two necessary components. She believed two things about the Lord. Sarah believed that God was able to do what He promised, and that God was faithful to do what He promised. The Lord had promised Abraham and Sarah a son, and that through him the world would be blessed. We read in Hebrews 11:11, “By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.” Note those two aspects of her faith. She believed God was able to strengthen her to conceive and bear a child. She believed God was faithful to do what He promised – “she judged him faithful who had promised.” Oh, that we had such simple yet God-honoring faith!
