In verses 8-9 of 1 Corinthians 7, Paul addressed the unmarried in the church at Corinth. In verses 10-16, he directed his attention to the married. The issue was that of divorce and whether it is appropriate to remarry. Paul dealt with two scenarios. In the case of two believers who are married, they must not divorce, but if they divorce, they must remain unmarried or be remarried to each other (vv. 10-11). In the case of a believer who is married to an unbeliever, the believer must not divorce his or her unbelieving spouse. However, if the unbeliever seeks a divorce, the believer must let the unbeliever go. Under this scenario, the believer is no longer bound to the marriage and is permitted to remarry another (vv. 12-16).
