Jesus said, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” (see Luke 9:62). The Lord indicated in another place that it is those who endure in the faith to the end of their lives or until He comes again who will be saved (see Mat.24:13). The writer of Hebrews encouraged his readers, and encourages us today, to endure in the faith until we receive the promise of eternal salvation (Heb.10:26-39). He wrote, “Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise” (10:35-36).
In the first part of this passage, the author warned those first century Jews who had professed faith in Christ of the severe consequences of turning back from following the Lord (10:26-31; cp. 2:1-4, 3:12, 3:12, 6:4-8). In the second part of the passage, he not only encourages them to continue in the faith, but expresses his confidence that they will (10:32-39). He wrote at the end of this passage, “But we are not those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul” (vs.39). O that we who have professed our trust in Jesus Christ, continue in the faith to the end of our lives or until He returns and gathers us to Himself.
