The “rich young ruler” went away sorrowful from his conversation with Jesus because he had great possessions. He realized he could not obtain eternal life and become a follower of Jesus until he had turned from his wealth which had become his idol (Mat 19:16-22). After he departed, Jesus told His disciples that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God (Mat 19:24-30). They were amazed by this declaration of Jesus concerning the rich. It was generally accepted that riches were an indication of God’s blessing, and so, if it is hard for a rich man to enter God’s kingdom, they wondered whether anyone could be saved.
A man or woman whether rich or poor cannot bring about their salvation. According to Jesus, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle! Salvation is impossible for men, but with God all things are possible including the salvation of the rich who tend to trust in their riches (cp. Mark 10:24). We are reminded of the wonderful truth – salvation is of the Lord!
