The blessed hope that Christ will one day return to earth and receive us to Himself helps us endure the difficult days we experience in the meantime. It is a hope to which we can flee for refuge and find great comfort in trying times. This hope is an anchor of the soul keeping us from drifting away from Him Who graced us with eternal salvation. This anchor of hope keeps us from going adrift for it is grounded firmly and deeply in the promises of God. The writer of Hebrews encourages us to imitate those who faith and patience inherit the promises (6:12). There is a list of them in chapter 11 who followed the Lord in the face of great difficulties. Though they died without receiving what was promised they were assured of those promises and kept the faith to the end.
One of those people was Abraham (6:13-20). God made a promise to him, and then confirmed it with an oath! The Lord did that to demonstrate the utter certainty of His word to the heirs of promise. The Lord went above and beyond to show us that what He has promised we are absolutely sure to inherit! What hope we have!
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you (1 Peter 1:3-4),
