As we resume our study of the epistle to the Hebrews we will soon be reminded that there are challenges in fully understanding it. We are helped by the author when he writes after seven chapters, “Now this is the main point of the things we are saying…” (8:1). Ok, so what is the point of all this discussion about angels and Moses and Joshua and Aaron and oh yea, especially Melchizedek?! Here it is……wait for it……“We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens.” This High Priest is Jesus Christ who gave Himself as a sacrifice for our sins, and is now sitting at the right hand of God where He ever lives to make intercession for us. This is a very significant point to all of us who have trusted in Christ today!
This point or truth was especially significant to the first readers of Hebrews. They were Jewish people in the first century who had professed faith in Christ, but were being tempted because of persecution to return to life and faith under the Old Covenant. They were in danger of going back under a priestly system whose sacrifices could not take away sins. Though those priests offered sacrifices continually for them, they could not be saved eternally from their sins. But through His one sacrifice and continuous High Priestly intercession Jesus was able to save completely and eternally all of them who came to God through Him!
