This Christmas season, we are considering the Incarnation of the eternal Son of God by examining four related titles of the Lord Jesus: the seed of the woman, the seed of Abraham, the seed of David and the seed or Son of Mary. We learn as the story of the Bible unfolds that the Seed of the woman predicted in Genesis 3:15 to destroy the devil and his works (Heb.2:14; 1Jo 3:8) would be also a descendant of Abraham.
The LORD called Abraham out of his homeland in Mesopotamia, led him to the land of Canaan, promised to multiply his descendants as the stars of heaven and the sand which is on the sea shore thus making him a great nation. That great nation is of course the nation of Israel, through whom God promised to bring blessing to the world. The blessing of Abraham came upon the world through Jesus Christ, the Seed of Abraham. In Galatians 3:16, Paul makes this astounding statement, “Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, ‘And to seeds,’ as of many, but as of one, ‘And to your Seed,’ who is Christ.’”
The promises God made, he made ultimately to Abraham and only one of his descendants, Jesus Christ. And so, God would fulfill those promises in Jesus Christ. God’s promise to bless the nations of the earth through Abraham and his descendants was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. That blessing is the salvation or justification Christ provided through His death and resurrection. In essence, the blessing of eternal life comes through the gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone who believes.
