The Suffering Messiah

Leading up to Christmas we considered the two well-known prophecies of Christ’s birth found in Isaiah 7 and 9 (7:14 and 9:6-7). Today we will look at Isaiah’s famous prophecy of the atoning death of the Messiah (52:13-53:12). The passage is broad in its prophetic scope as it predicts Christ’s birth, physical development into a man, sinless life, substitutionary death, burial, resurrection, ascension, exaltation, and possibly even His second coming. Before partaking of the Lord’s Supper today, we will consider Isaiah’s prophecy of the Messiah’s sin-bearing death for the salvation of His people.
