My grandmother used to say, “Your word is your bond.” What you say you will do you will do even with no formal agreement or contract. James warns us against taking oaths (5:12), but not because it is a sin to swear an oath. As Christians we must always tell the truth whether or not we are under oath or bound by a contractual agreement. The word of God says, “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No,’ lest you fall into judgment.” Are you a truth teller?
