Having asked the Colossian believers to pray that he might have opportunities to speak of Christ to others (4:2-4), he exhorts them to make the most of their opportunities with those outside the Christian community (4:5-6). Like those Christians Paul was exhorting, we should be gracious in our conversations with those who are not in Christ. We must use the opportunities God gives us to communicate Christ to people in the most attractive ways while being ready to answer the questions each one may have about the Christian faith. The way we live before people outside the church is also important. Paul urges us to “walk in wisdom toward those who are outside.” We must conduct ourselves in a way that testifies to the fact that we have believed in Christ, and very much desire to please Him. As Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Mat.5:16).
