The first epistle of John is a practical sequel to his gospel. It instructs us on how to enjoy our fellowship with the Father and how to have a full assurance of our eternal life. Both of these blessings come through Jesus Christ, who John emphasizes as the incarnate (“in the flesh”) Son of God, and together they form the overarching purpose of John’s epistle. John reminds us that we can enjoy our fellowship with the Father based on a full assurance of our eternal life. This assurance of eternal life is evidenced by our obedience and love, and it is grounded in the character of God and the certainty of His promise for those who have received His Son. May God use our study this morning to give us a confident assurance of eternal life, and to strengthen our fellowship with God and with one another.
