Jesus said in Luke 12:15, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” Today, we are going to consider the stewardship of our possessions. Everything we possess, God owns. Therefore, we are stewards of all that we have and must manage our possessions to glorify God and advance His work on earth.
In the parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:13-21), the rich man in the parable was blessed with an abundant harvest, but rather than use it to glorify God, he built bigger barns to keep it all for himself. The point of the parable is we must not lay up treasure for ourselves but be rich toward God. Paul used similar language when writing to Timothy about rich Christians (1 Timothy 6:17-19). He wrote, “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” (vv. 18-19).
