Standing Up to the Devil

Peter warns us that our adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.  Christians are always on his menu so we must be spiritually awake and sober.  We must think clearly about the threat he poses, and be alert to that threat (1Pet 5:8-9).  When we are attacked, we must resist him, or in other words, “stand up to him.”  Obviously, we cannot stand up to him in our own strength.  In another passage on spiritual warfare, Paul wrote, “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might” (Eph 6:10).  We tap into the Lord’s power by faith.  That’s why Peter wrote urging us to “resist the devil, steadfast in the faith.”  Our faith in Christ and His word must be strong so that we are able to discern the devil’s deception and overcome his temptations.  Paul said, “…above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one (Ephesians 6:16).  James said it this way, “Therefore submit to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (Jam 4:7-8a).
